Tips NUS Sustainability Programmes Roundtable 2015

How to recruit… Communication and Momentum Incentives and Rewards Part of the Team/something bigger

Basic recruiting tips… Communication Create a mailing list Communicate regularly Use recruitment methods suitable to your audience (e.g. Twitter/Facebook) Have a volunteer role description that reflects the task, time, location and length of commitment of the opportunity

Basic recruiting tips… Incentives Provide a list of incentives (e.g. employability skills) Official status of volunteering Responsibility Part of team/something bigger Communicate targets, e.g. CO2 savings Regular opportunities Treat volunteers like colleagues Events

Recruiting Staff Tips… All staff From CEO/VC/Chair Mapping teams/recruitment By area/faculty/department Helps mid-way through to see the gaps Share with senior managers helps to create support for recruitment. Peer-to-peer recruitment Encouraged through the workbook Social occasions E.g. monthly coffee mornings, events are positive occasions to recruit new staff

Recruiting Student Tips… Do it early Recruit in the first few weeks of the new academic year Embed the opportunities …within dissertation/research opportunities, electives and modules Link to student volunteering schemes E.g. The Bath Award Use hall mentors/ambassadors These students can be used to access fresher's and provide them with information Get GI teams to recruit their own PAs Get teams more involved in student recruitment

Examples NUS Sustainability Programmes Roundtable 2015

Student Switch Off ambassadors University of Roehampton SSO competition is tied into the college cup. Students get college cup points for attending the ambassador training session. Moral of the story – there is probably already some structure in place to engage students (wardens, colleges)

Green Impact teams Cardiff University Gold criteria - to mentor a new team. Helps with recruitment of a new team and also provides new teams with a network and support.

Your suggestions… NUS Sustainability Programmes Roundtable 2015

Group brainstorm Get into groups Try and make sure your with people from different institutions. Brainstorm different ways of getting staff or students involved Try and provide tangible examples Feedback to the group

Finally… Remember to measure, promote and celebrate success, these means you’re not starting from scratch each year.
