The Nature of Leadership A new perspective on the science of leadership

What to Call Leadership Is it and art A study A discipline A Theoretical construct An Industry.

Leadership vs Management Doing things right -efficiency -bottom line focus -How and Who and Where? Doing the right things -values -process -What and Why?

Industrial Model of Leadership Person(s) at the top Exceptional qualities and abilities Goal achiever Motivate others to accomplish goals Controller of outcomes Replacement of the individual needs

Leadership defined All about the leader Drive Motivation Honesty Integrity Self-confidence Cognitive ability

Conventional Thinking Self-help books Pop management books It’s all about influencing people to do things that the leader or organizational representative wishes Socialize and orient members in the ways of institutional needs

A Different Approach What motivates people to modify their self-interest to work collectively toward common goals? Leadership is a process not a function of someone being in charge or in control Leadership is a function of individual wills, needs, and values and the result of the dynamics of collective will organized to meet those various needs and values If there is no need for change there is no need for leadership

So how is this different? Leadership is not about authority or structure. Leadership is not about managing the context or situation or even people as an obstacle to be overcome. Leadership is a process of unfolding change where the values of the individuals are integrated into the mores of the community
