NAS versus SAN NAS – Architecture to provide dedicated file level access on the network – A NAS is effectively a dedicated OS, providing file management functions – a file server – Access at file level rather than block level, thus can be poor for database – Architecture to allow operating system to attach to remote disks, but appearing to the operating system to be locally attached SAN – Operating system maintains the file system – Access is at the block level – ideal for database, server data, high usage file server data

IP SANs (WAN Protocols) Provides SAN access over any IP network (Think Wide Area Networks)  IP SAN transports block-level data over IP network  IP is being positioned as a storage networking option because:  Existing network infrastructure can be leveraged  Reduced cost compared to investing in new FC SAN hardware and software  Many long-distance disaster recovery solutions already leverage IP- based networks  Many robust and mature security options are available for IP network Module 6: IP SAN and FCoE10
