ACED Mission Statement The Ateneo Center for Educational Development (ACED) spearheads the University's mission to close the poverty gap and improve quality of life through improving public basic education in scale. It aims to move up the performance of clusters of public schools through initiatives that are needs-based, community-owned, and outcomes-based, by engaging various units of the Ateneo de Manila, the school communities, DepEd at the national and local levels, and local government. It facilitates partnerships with individuals and institutions to marshal human and material resources to support its mission.

The Story of Lupang Pangako ES ACED facilitated the coming-together of the community Quezon City Mayor was impressed and moved forward to build the needed buildings, classrooms and comfort rooms private sectors provided other needed inputs (feeding, textbooks, etc) Rank 94 (2003) – Rank 18 (2004) – Rank 16 (2005) – Rank 9 (2007)

Overall Approach  School-profiling  Strategic Planning  Targeted Interventions

School-Profiling  this school-based research aims to generate baseline data on the school’s actual vs. perceived situation  the needs that will surface from the data will have to be addressed for interventions to be effective (e.g. basic infrastructure needs)

Strategic Planning  involves the entire school community (principal, teachers, students, parents, barangay officials)  the school and community must come together and make the decision to work towards the improvement of their school  output: doable and realistic school development plan

Targeted Interventions  Principal-Empowerment Programs  Leadership Development Programs  Teacher-Empowerment Programs  Teacher Training Programs  Certificate or Degree Programs for Teachers  Dental – Optha Missions  Feeding Programs

“Specific, useful data is important in the effort to improve public schools in the country. In the Philippines, data is usually just reported in averages but averages are not very useful. For example, the National Achievement Test of the Division of Quezon City may be 74% but the interventions for a school like Commonwealth Elementary School with a score of 50% should be different from the interventions for a school like Placido del Mundo Elementary School with a score of 80%”

 Note the targeted interventions by various NSTP groups:  The group in charge of the Review Sessions for National Achievement Test will be targeting everyone but in general those in the middle percentiles  The group in charge of the Remedial for Non-Readers and Poor Readers will be targeting all the students performing below the 50 th percentile.  The group in charge of the Academic Enhancement for Advanced Grade 5 will be targeting the 233 students who are gifted in Math  The group in charge of Health and Nutrition will be targeting all the children who are not able to do well in school because of poor nutrition
