Social Relations Model Designs David A. Kenny June 17, 2013

Round Robin Design The prototypical SRM design. Persons in groups. Each person is both actor and partner with every other member of the group.

Round Robin Design x x x x x 2 x - x x x x 3 x x - x x x 4 x x x - x x 5 x x x x - x 6 x x x x x -

Variants Indistinguishable members –teams or groups Distinguishable members –families or work teams with roles

Block Design People are divided into two sets. Person rate or interact with all of the members of the other set. Can viewed as round-robin design with specially chosen missing data.

Block Design x x x x x x x x x 4 y y y y y y y y y - - -

Symmetric Block Design: Indistinguishable Members x x x x x x x x x 4 x x x x x x x x x - - -

Asymmetric Block Design: Distinguishable Members x x x x x x x x x 4 y y y y y y y y y - - -

Asymmetric Block Design Illustration: Speed Dating Two sets of actor and partner variances –One for the men –One for the women Reciprocities –Actor-partner correlation for men and women –One dyadic reciprocity

Half Block Design: Nonreciprocal Design x x x x x x x x x

Block Round Robin Design y y x x x 2 y - y x x x 3 y y - x x x 4 w w w - z z 5 w w w z - z 6 w w w z z -

Haphazard Design A design that is neither block or round robin, but most actors have multiple partners and most partners have multiple actors.
