The Academy for Educational Excellence and Scholarship Purpose: The Academy for Educational Excellence and Scholarship (Academy) at the University of Michigan Medical School is intended to recognize and augment the educational rigor and innovation of its faculty, to promote faculty development in education/mentoring, foster the visibility of UMMS educational leadership nationally and internationally, and to mobilize these talents to improve educational outcomes.

The Academy for Educational Excellence and Scholarship Academy Activities  Nurture the educational community (educational grand rounds, Academy membership meetings, special events, communications, etc.)  Faculty development/mentoring  Peer-review of educational activities and outcomes  Recognition of excellence in education  Expert advisory input for institutional planning and decision making  Investigate educational methods at peer institutions and adopt new ideas to improve education at Michigan  Disseminate UMMS leadership and innovation to the larger educational community

Academy of Medical Educators Membership/Selection/Recognition Workgroup  All medical school faculty eligible to become active members –Our prior meetings - 28% clin asst prof, 35% instructional prof –No letters, educational portfolio, or coach needed! –All must submit application by 12/16/13 for 2 year term –We chose to be inclusive, participatory, not honorific  Membership citizenship expectations include active time (roughly 20 hrs/year) participating in: –Monthly meeting participation, retreats –Peer review, mentoring –Educational Scholarship –Investigation and dissemination of best practices –Valuing education and visioning

Academy of Medical Educators Membership/Selection/Recognition Workgroup  Data from the applications will serve as needs assessment and help drive agenda –What learners? –What venues? –Importance of Scholarship? –What do you hope to gain, benefits sought? –What are your unique contributions, new ideas?  The next tier, a fellowship level, will be discussed within 6-12 months, chosen by peers

Task 1: Monthly meetings  Format (at least initially) –Announcements –20 minute presentation / demos / “TED talks” / –Reactions / sharing / networking  Topics for presentation / topics for discussions –Insiders / outsiders –Find best teachers / innovative methods and share –Debates / Teaching M and M’s –How to best find presenters  Best days / times / locations may need to vary

Task 2: Faculty Development  Assess the academy members’ needs –Teaching / assessing / mentoring / –Educational programming and research  Coordinate, supplement, expand upon other faculty development activities (MESP, morning and noon seminar series, dept. based initiatives, sim center activities)

Discussion  Analyze and critique how we were just being taught. What did you see, hear, or feel that would explain why he received the highest teaching award from our University?  What didn’t you see that surprised you or that you would have done to perhaps make a good talk better?  What did you witness that you will try to incorporate into your own teaching?
