College Seminar January 27, 2014 *Winning Behaviors ACT Mindset

Bell Ringer 5 Minutes  Review your pre-ACT score, keeping in mind the universities and/or colleges that you are applying to, what areas do you need to improve on and why?

AIM  Define the terms; mindset and meta cognition  Describe and analyze mindsets commonly experienced in the face of challenge/moments of struggle  Identity and record personal mindsets

CHAMPS  C=conversation, you may speak during class share out and when directed to speak with your peers *REMINDER WE PRACTICE RESPECT!  H=help, please raise your hand  A=activity, you are sharing out and responding to the text.  M=movement we are not, all supplies will be given to you  P=participation, you are listening and responding to your peers, NO heads down, cell phones and/or eating

Brain Dump 10 minutes  Welcome to second semester! A NEW START!  Getting ready for the ACT, 3 months to go!  Read the directions of the brain dump, you have 5 minutes to read on your OWN!  3 minutes to share out your responses and how they relate to the ACT and your mindset.

Mindset and Meta Cognition 10 minutes  Review definitions of Mindset and Meta cognition  How to coach yourself during the ACT

Mindset and Meta Cognition 10 minutes  Discussion questions,  How would you describe the mindset of the first comments that I made?  What might be the consequences of adopting this negative mindset?  How would you describe the mindset of the second set of comments?  What might be the consequences of adopting this positive mindset?  What do you think was going on in my head that allowed me to reflect meta cognitively?

ACT Mindset 15 minutes  Now you are going to practice coaching yourself.  You are going to demonstrate the same process, no need to answer the problems just what you are thinking as you read them.

Exit Ticket 5 Minutes  Read “Struggle” out loud as a class.  Underline words or phrases that stand out to you  Share what you underlined and why  *Get ready this is the unit that you have been waiting for it’s time for ACT Prep
