Bell Ringer Explain what argumentative writing is including what purpose it provides the reader.

Student Target “I can write an argumentative essay to support my opinions surrounding a debatable topic.”

Thinking Question for today! What purpose does a counter claim provide in an argumentative writing? In other words, what does it “do” for the reader? This is your EXIT SLIP ????? Today – so prepare your self!

Argumentative Writing A way to “take a stand,” express your opinion, and make a statement about your beliefs!

What is it? A writing that allows you to provide evidence that supports the logic in a pro or con side of a topic You choose the pro or con situation and then write arguments with facts that supports your opinion or “stance” of the topic You want to persuade the reader that your viewpoint is the correct one

How’s Argumentative different from Persuasive Writing The objective of a persuasive essay is to “win” the reader over to your side of an argument, while the primary objective of an argumentative essay is just to show that you have a valid argument, allowing the reader either to adopt your position or to “agree to disagree”.

Another difference between the two types of essay is that in the persuasive essay, although you acknowledge the opposing view, only one side of the issue is debated. An important part of the argumentative essay is to use evidence both to substantiate one’s own position and to refute the opposing argument. The final difference between the argumentative essay and the argument (persuasive) essay is the organization of the composition.

Your Approach Create a “Hook” to capture the reader’s attention Write general sentences about the topic – what it is Creating a Thesis Statement – this contains the points that you are going to support (3 pros or 3 cons) Creating a Thesis Statement Establishing Arguments – for each point in the thesis statement you state supporting evidence why your point is the logical choice – why your opinion is the correct one Establishing Arguments Organizing Your 3 points in a logical manner Use a transition to go from each point paragraph to the next one Use a transition to go from each point paragraph to the next one Counter claim – provide evidence for any counter claim and explain why it isn’t valid Counter claim Conclusions – summarize your claims, restate your thesis in a unique manner, leave the reader interested & hopefully convinced that your opinion is correct!! Conclusions
