Mandarin Chinese The Mandarin language does not have an alphabet, per se. There are characters which are aligned with a pronunciations or tones. The Pinyin is a method of translating the Chinese tones into the Roman alphabet is for people to learn the tones a little easier. When pronouncing Mandarin, care must be taken to not only pronounce them with the same sound, but also at the same pitch or tone.
