Moon Phases Calendar By: Erin Dorsey

Objective The second grade students will create a calendar of the moon phases using the software Microsoft Excel, the World Wide Web, and clip art to meet the expectations provided on the rubric.

Materials Computers with Microsoft Excel and the internet Student science journal with daily log of what the moon looked like as they observed it over the month. Blank Calendar for rough drafts Pre made folder with moon pictures Example moon phases calendar Grading Rubric

Introduction (day 1) Review with students the phases of the moon. Ask what the phases are, what order they come in, etc. Then have students get out their science journal where they have observed and recorded the phases of the moon for the past month.

Modeling (day 1)

Rubric

Independent Work (day 1) Students work with partner to complete the rough draft calendar using their observation notes.

Closure (day 1) With the remaining time, we will share just a few of the rough draft calendars to make sure everyone is complete and has the correct days with the correct phases.

Introduction (day 2) Have students look at their rough draft calendars from the day before to see if there are any changes that need to be made before they go to the computer lab. .

Independent Work (day 2) Students will independently create their moon phase poster using the provided rubric. As students are working direct them to double check their calendar with the calendar presented on the website http://www.tutiempo.net/en/moon/phases_5_2009.htm

Closure (day 2) With the remaining time, we will share just a few of the calendars that the students created.
