Jesus Ascends to Heaven 7/18/2010 Jesus Ascends to Heaven Acts 1:1 - 11 Presented by Bob DeWaay July 18, 2010

The introduction to Luke serves as an introduction to Luke/Acts In as much as many have undertaken to compile an account of the things accomplished among us, just as they were handed down to us by those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and servants of the word,

God wants us to know the “exact truth” which means “certainty” Luke 1:3, 4 it seemed fitting for me as well, having investigated everything carefully from the beginning, to write it out for you in consecutive order, most excellent Theophilus; so that you may know the exact truth about the things you have been taught.

Themes in Acts The movement of the gospel throughout the world (Acts 1:8) The purposes of God being accomplished through His providence The powerful work of the Holy Spirit The inclusiveness of God’s salvation The witness of the apostles who carry on Christ’s work The spread of the gospel despite opposition from religious and civil authorities

The apostles are to carry on the work Acts 1:1, 2 The first account I composed, Theophilus, about all that Jesus began to do and teach, until the day when He was taken up to heaven, after He had by the Holy Spirit given orders to the apostles whom He had chosen.

The truth has been confirmed Acts 1:3 To these He also presented Himself alive after His suffering, by many convincing proofs, appearing to them over a period of forty days and speaking of the things concerning the kingdom of God.

They will not be ready for their ministry roles without being baptized in the Holy Spirit Acts 1:4, 5 Gathering them together, He commanded them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait for what the Father had promised, “Which,” He said, “you heard of from Me; for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”

They enquire about the salvation of ethnic, national Israel Acts 1:6, 7 So when they had come together, they were asking Him, saying, “Lord, is it at this time You are restoring the kingdom to Israel?” He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or epochs which the Father has fixed by His own authority;”

The spread of the Christian witness throughout the world Acts 1:8 but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth.

The ascension of Jesus Christ Acts 1:9, 10 And after He had said these things, He was lifted up while they were looking on, and a cloud received Him out of their sight. And as they were gazing intently into the sky while He was going, behold, two men in white clothing stood beside them.

Jesus Christ will return bodily Acts 1:11 They also said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into the sky? This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come in just the same way as you have watched Him go into heaven.”

Implications and Applications 1) The work of Christ continues on earth through the Holy Spirit 2) The truth of the gospel is confirmed with certainty 3) The Lord will one day restore Israel with Christ on the throne of David

1) The work of Christ continues on earth through the Holy Spirit John 15:26, 27 When the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, that is the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify about Me, and you will testify also, because you have been with Me from the beginning.

1) The work of Christ continues on earth through the Holy Spirit John 14:16, 17 I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever; that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you and will be in you.

1) The work of Christ continues on earth through the Holy Spirit Romans 8:8-11 and those who are in the flesh cannot please God. However, you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him. If Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, yet the spirit is alive because of righteousness. But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.

2) The truth of the gospel is confirmed with certainty 2Peter 1:16, 17 For we did not follow cleverly devised tales when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of His majesty. For when He received honor and glory from God the Father, such an utterance as this was made to Him by the Majestic Glory, “This is My beloved Son with whom I am well-pleased”

2) The truth of the gospel is confirmed with certainty 1Corinthians 15:13, 14 But if there is no resurrection of the dead, not even Christ has been raised; and if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is vain, your faith also is vain.

2) The truth of the gospel is confirmed with certainty 1Corinthians 15:15 - 17 Moreover we are even found to be false witnesses of God, because we testified against God that He raised Christ, whom He did not raise, if in fact the dead are not raised. For if the dead are not raised, not even Christ has been raised; and if Christ has not been raised, your faith is worthless; you are still in your sins.

3) The Lord will one day restore Israel with Christ on the throne of David Acts 3:19 - 21 Therefore repent and return, so that your sins may be wiped away, in order that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord; and that He may send Jesus, the Christ appointed for you, whom heaven must receive until the period of restoration of all things about which God spoke by the mouth of His holy prophets from ancient time.
