Christ in Romans: 1. The Second Adam 2. The Substitute 3. The Sanctifier
The Second Adam Romans 5:14 Nevertheless death reigned from Adam until Moses, even over those who had not sinned in the likeness of the offense of Adam, who is a type of Him who was to come. Romans 5:12 Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned.
Romans 5:19 For as through the one man's disobedience the many were made sinners, even so through the obedience of the One the many will be made righteous.
The Substitute Romans 8:3 God [sent] His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and as an offering for sin.
The Sanctifier Romans 8:11 But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.
Romans 8:32-33 He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him over for us all, how will He not also with Him freely give us all things? 33 Who will bring a charge against God's elect? God is the one who justifies; 34 who is the one who condemns?
Place in the Canon: Historically, Romans shows us exactly what Paul (and the other apostles) believed about Jesus. Theologically, it gives us a basis for our own system of beliefs. Devotionally, we should be led to glorify God for his mercy in our salvation through Jesus Christ.
