Searching the Online Catalog Milford High School Media Center gisirsi/kckfadEesb/MIHS/ / 60/1180/X

To complete the task you will need: A partner seated next to you Two computers, one for you and one for your partner

How do I find the online catalog? (at school) 1. Go to the “Wing It” page after logging on. 2. Under “Research Tools” click on Milford High School Library. (It’s the first one!)

How do I find the online catalog? (at home) 1. Go to Milfordschools.org 2. Click on Downloads/Links from the red bar near the top. 3. Click “High School Start Page” from the choices on the right. 4. That takes you to the “Wing It” page. Click on Milford High School Library under “Research Tools”.

The 1920’s Project

This is the screen you will see when you are logged on to our online catalog.

There are 3 search options, but for our purposes, “Keyword” will be the most helpful.

Enter your person in the search bar. Choose “HERE” for MHS library, rather than MJHS or one of the elementaries.

We have several options, but let’s start with “Nonfiction”.

The default setting is “New to Old”. Since we can’t choose 2 options here, we will choose “all fields” so we don’t miss anything.

We got 2 results. This book looks like it is all about Al Capone. This one probably has a section or chapter about Al Capone. Let’s look at this one for a brief overview of Mr. Capone.

This doesn’t give much information. Let’s click “Full Description”.

1. There is a section or chapter about Al Capone. 2. Let’s “Keep” it.

Click here to see all of the materials you “kept”.

You can add to this list and print it.

Now it’s your turn to search some other topics. You and your partner will complete the powerpoint presentation using the library’s online catalog. One computer will stay with the powerpoint and one will be logged on to the MHS library’s online catalog to find the answers to the questions in the powerpoint. Tip- Always use the catalog’s back button, rather than your browser’s back button.

MHS Online Catalog Practice

That’s correct! Good for you! on to the next question

Oops! Try again. Try again

How is the first resource different than the others? It's by far the longest. It's the only one with pictures. It's an e-book.

Oops! Try again.

Click for Term That’s correct! To the next question

Which of these resources looks like it would be the least useful for a factual report? Why? The Decade that Roared because it’s about prohibition. The Decade that Roared F. Scott Fitzgerald stories because it is fiction. F. Scott Fitzgerald stories From Flappers to Flivvers because it has an editor instead of an author. From Flappers to Flivvers

That’s wrong. Try again!

That’s correct! To the next question.

Oops- that’s not right. Try Again. Try Again

Next we will search for Charles Lindbergh. Which search gets us the most hits? Charles Lindbergh Lindbergh, Charles They both get the same number of hits.

That is right! Good for you! On to the next question.

Oops. Not quite right. Try again

If your topic was Charles Lindbergh which source would probably be the most helpful? The Spirit of St. Louis The boyhood diary of Charles Lindbergh, : early adventures of the famous aviator The boyhood diary of Charles Lindbergh, : early adventures of the famous aviator Charles Lindbergh

No. Sorry. If you click on the title, and then click on “Nearby items on shelf”, you’ll see that this is a book about the plane and is shelved as such. Try again!

No. Sorry. Although this is about Charles Lindbergh, it really only includes his early years. Try again.

Yes! That’s correct! On to the next question

Are there any pictures in the book titled Charles Lindbergh? Yes. No, but it has several maps. I can’t tell.

That’s correct! You can tell by the abbreviation “illus”. On to the next question.

No. That’s not right. Try again.

Let’s try a keyword search/all fields search for jazz. How many hits do you get?

No. Look again. Try again.

Yes! It’s a lot because we didn’t limit the type of material. On to the next question.

That was too many hits. Narrow your search by choosing only nonfiction items. Now how many do you get?

Yes. That’s correct! On to the last question!

No. Look again. Try again.

Which source would be the most helpful if you wanted photographs to copy and cite for your report? Jazz Masters of the 20’s Fifty great American silent films, : a pictorial survey Fifty great American silent films, : a pictorial survey A pictorial history of jazz; people and places from New Orleans to modern jazz A pictorial history of jazz; people and places from New Orleans to modern jazz

You are finished!!
