General Election 2010 What the Parties Say – Transport

The Conservative Party – Transport Support the London Crossrail project but do not want to spend as much money on it. Build a North-South high-speed rail line. Stop the third runway at Heathrow. Sell off the airports in the South-East of England to difference companies. Make the railways take more notice of what passengers think and give passengers more of a say. Should not charge people to use roads. Stop the price of petrol going up too much if prices of oil increase. Only let local councils put up speed cameras if they are going to make things safer for people.

The Labour Party – Transport Carry on building the London Crossrail project. Build a £30 billion "Y-shaped" high-speed rail-line from London to Manchester and Leeds via Birmingham. Support the third runway for Heathrow on condition that air quality, noise and carbon emissions reductions are good. Spend £10 billion on building more railways by 2014, including £5.5 billion for Thameslink, £600m to improve stations at Birmingham New Street and Reading and £150m for 150 other stations. Not charge people to pay to use roads before Increase the tax on petrol by 3p, in three stages over the next year.

The Liberal Democrats – Transport Charge lorries to use the roads and use the money to improve the transport system. Stop the third runway at Heathrow. Support Crossrail, but spend less Government money to build it. In the future, charge people to use motorways and major roads. Spend money on a high speed rail network across the UK. Give local councils more control over bus services in their areas. Don’t build any new roads unless they are really needed. All new office blocks and other places of employment to have proper facilities for cycling.

The Green Party – Transport Double the amount of buses. Cheaper bus fares. The Government should own the railway system spend money on improving it. Cut UK rail fares by 33%. Stop all new airport runways, including third runway at Heathrow. Stop any more major new roads. Charge a fuel tax on all planes arriving in, or departing from, EU airports. Charge tax on using planes. Increase the tax paid on using roads. Charge cars for using roads. Encourage people to walk and cycle.

UKIP – Transport Use money released from leaving the EU to build new bypasses and fund road improvements and widening schemes; introduce a 'Britdisc' for foreign lorries using British roads; return government fuel tax windfalls to motorists if oil prices rise above a set price; invest in three new high-speed rail lines; allow longer rail franchise periods; scrap London Crossrail project; oppose a sixth terminal and third runway at Heathrow, but support the case for a new London Airport in the Thames Estuary; give residents a vote on speed cameras and remove them where they "serve no use".
