Welcome to Model UN! Mrs. Cantu Room 1732

Objective: 1. To familiarize the Magnolia High School community with the role and practices of the United Nations; 2. To understand more clearly international issues through thoughtful discussion; 3. To serve as the liaison for participation in conferences for Model United Nations or those dealing with international political and legal issues.

About the Conference The purpose of the club is to prepare for the Houston Area Model UN (HAMUN) Conference in February This year it will be at the University of Houston on January 29 th and 30 th The cost is $40 per person for the two-day conference Over 30 high schools and 900 students participate at Conference  Scholarships are available

What do I need to do to join? Have your parents sign the permission slip and bring it to our next meeting Bring $10 as non-refundable dues (cash or check made out to MHS) Attend meetings once a month Attending Conference is optional and is an additional $30 (due by 12/16)

Officer Positions President: To organize the activities of the organization between the advisor, the high school, and club members. Administrative oversight for conference participation shall be executed by the President and the advisors. Vice President: To support the activities of the President, acting in the place of the President in his/her absence. Membership shall be overseen by the Vice President as well as the administrative oversight for educational and community activities. Secretary: To advertise meetings, record membership and activities of the club, and maintain all external correspondence. Treasurer: To maintain all financial records for the club, including all funds received and spent. Public Relations: To maintain business relations with sponsors and promote Model UN to the school through fundraising and good relationships.

Officer Applications Pick up an officer application from Mrs. Cantu It will be due by Monday, September 21st Officer elections will be held at our next meeting, September 22 nd I must have your permission slip and $10 dues by Monday, September 21 st in order to be on the ballot Only returning members can run for President or Vice-President

How will I know which country I want to represent? Students that turn in their permission slips and dues are the only ones that will be assigned a country and committee The officers and I will look at your country and committee preferences and give you your assignment by the October 20 th meeting

What do I need to do to attend Conference? Pay the Conference fee of $30 Bring an additional permission slip signed by your parents Write a position paper on your country’s view on one of your committee topics Dress appropriately for Conference Maintain passing grades and have good attendance in your classes prior to Conference
