Self Concept 1111. What is “self-concept”? Give at least three ways our self-concept is formed. SSSSelf-concept is the way we see ourselves… based on the information that we get from our environment and those people in our environment. It’s not what we feel about ourselves, but what we think about ourselves. IIIIt is our thoughts that cause feelings and not the other way around. One way our self-concept is formed is through our –1–1–1–1. Social Experiences –2–2–2–2. Social Comparisons –3–3–3–3. Reflected Appraisals

Social experiences  Initial thoughts come from those who care for us as infants.  As we grow, thoughts about ourselves come from others who form our ever expanding circle of people and relationships.  We play with neighborhood kids. We go to day-care. Before you know it, we’re off to school

Social Experiences  Then you’re playing T-ball, or you’re in dance class. This group continues to expand and finally takes in everyone around us. All of them are giving us feedback about ourselves. The messages we accept help form our self-concepts.

Circle of influence  We all must have input from others to help us know who we are. Hopefully, it will be positive input, that helps build healthy self- concepts.  Sports –Have you ever noticed, those of you who are involved in competitive activities, that we’re very selective about whom we want to compete against? –We don’t want to just play people we blow away.  That’s no fun. It’s not fun to play people who blow us away every time we play them either! The truth is, we want to compete against people who are at least somewhat close to us in ability.

Social comparisons WWWWhat do we learn? –T–T–T–That we are fat or skinny, fast or slow, rich or poor, tall or short, etc. as we compare ourselves to others. –S–S–S–So, here is a story about a boy at a school where Flip Flippen once taught. –W–W–W–When we were kids and others said hurtful things to us, we like to say, “Sticks and stone may break my bones, but words can never hurt me!” BUT THAT IS NOT TRUE! WORDS DO HURT US, VERY MUCH!
