TITLE: SENTENCE STRUCTURE ELA8C1 EQ: WHAT ARE THE 4 TYPES OF SENTENCES

FOUR KINDS OF SENTENCES  SIMPLE SENTENCE  COMPOUND SENTENCE  COMPLEX SENTENCE  COMPOUND COMPLEX

SIMPLE SENTENCE  A SIMPLE SENTENCE CONTAINS ONE INDEPENDENT CLAUSE AND NO SUBORDINATE CLAUSES.  The hairstylist gave Patrice a new look. (subject) (verb)  Ernesto has volunteered to organize the recycling campaign.  Don’t confuse a sentence that has a compound subject and verb with a compound sentence. There is still only one complete thought.  The astronomer and her assistant studied the (subject) (subject) (verb)  and wrote reports.  (verb)

 Don’t confuse a sentence that has a compound subject and verb with a compound sentence. There is still only one complete thought. The astronomer and her assistant studied the (subject) (subject) (verb) and wrote reports.  (verb)

COMPOUND SENTENCE  A compound sentence contains two or more independent clauses and no subordinate clauses.  It is joined together by a coordinating conjunction: for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so.  The clause are connected by a comma and a coordinating conjunction, or a semicolon, or a semi colon, conjunctive adverb, and a comma.

EXAMPLES  COMMA  Alberto and Jared increased their speed, and they passed the other runners.  SEMI-COLON  Many mathematical concepts originated in North Africa; the ancient Egyptians used these concepts in building the pyramids.

 SEMI-COLON AND A CONJUNCTIVE ADVERB AND A COMMA  Lynn called Marty with the good news; however, he was not home.

COMPLEX SENTENCES  A complex sentence contains one independent clause and at least one subordinate clause. The independent clause can be interrupted by the dependent clause.

EXAMPLES  When I watch Martha Graham’s performances, I feel like studying dance.  All of the stars that we can see without a telescope are part of the Milky Way galaxy.

Compound-Complex Sentence  A compound complex sentence contains two or more independent clauses and at least one subordinate clause.  Yolanda began painting only two years ago, but already she has been asked to show one of her paintings at the exhibit that is scheduled or May.

The following simple sentence can be made into a more complex sentence by adding more clauses, conjunctions, and punctuation. I was late for work.

I was late for work, and I had a flat tire. What type of sentence is this?

Since I had a flat tire, I was late for work. What type of sentence is this?

 Because I had a flat tire, I was late for work, and I knew my boss was going to me mad.  What type of sentence is this?

Identify the following types of sentences:  People who are learning a new sport begin by mastering basic skills.  At this point a beginner may become discouraged, and the temptation to quit grows strong.  At the same time, coordination grows with confidence.  When enough oxygen reaches the warmed-up muscles, the danger of injury lessens, and the muscles grow in size.
