Plant Cell Mitosis Near the tip of a plant root is the meristematic region, an area where cells go through division rapidly. On the next slide is a photo-micrograph of a thin slice of this area of an onion root. It has been stained with multiple stains in order to show different structures. Click to continue. 1

Identify Cell Structures. 2 Click to continue.

Interphase cell structures. B C D 3 Click to continue.

Identify Phases of Mitosis. C B A D Note: Phases are not designated in mitotic order. Phases may repeat. 4 Click to continue.

Identify Phases of Mitosis. G Note: Phases are not designated in mitotic order. Phases may repeat. 5 Click to continue.

Identify Phases of Mitosis. J I K Note: Phases are not designated in mitotic order. Phases may repeat. 6 Click to continue.

Identify Mitotic Structures On the next few slides are onion root tip cells from the meristematic region, just as the previous slides have been. These cells are stained so that the cell walls are blue and the chromosome material is red. You will be asked to identify phases of mitosis and structures in the cells. 7 Click to continue.

Identify Mitotic Structures A This cell is in interphase. The next cells are not in mitotic order. 8 Click to continue.

Mitosis in Animal/Human Cells While mitosis in animal and human cells is quite similar to plant cell mitosis there are several differences. Cytokinesis in very different between animal/human cells and plant cells. The following are animal stem cells, which are noted for their rapid cell division, growing in a culture and stained to see the nucleus. 11 Click to continue.

Mitosis Mistake EXTRA CREDIT. On the next slide are several cells in interphase/prophase and one cell in mitosis. It, however, is in a pre-cancerous condition because of mistake(s) that is/are being made during the mitosis. Can you determine/describe what mistake(s) is/are being made? 14 Click to continue.

15 Click to continue.

Meiosis Meiosis is considerably different that mitosis. Diagrams of two types of meiosis are illustrated on the next slide. 16 Click to continue.

Finished You are now finished with this part of the lab. You may, of course, return to previous slides to check out anything you feel you need to. Be sure to finish the lab and hand it in on time for full credit.
