HAIR COLORING Chyna Jones Chemistry-7 th hr. June 3 rd, 2009

● The chemical makeup of the substance and the process used to make it…. Permanent hair coloring products consists of two components that are packaged separately and mixed together immediately before the application. One package contains a solution of hydrogen peroxide, usually 6%, in a water or a lotion base. The other package usually contains an ammonia solution of dye intermediates and performed dyes, called couplers. The primary intermediates are Ortho or Para diaminobenzenes, amiohydroxybenzenes, and to a lesser extent dihdroxybenzenses that develop color on oxidation.

● H ow the chemicals come together to make what we see as normal everyday stuff…. Hair coloring is a normal thing. Everyone does it no matter how young or old you may be. Hair coloring comes in all different tones, types and colors. The level system of hair color, which is a 1-10 scale used to measure darkness, level 1 being black and level 10 being light blonde. You will find crazy colors from hot pink to dark red. Most people in the world use their hair as a fashion statement and most people dare to be different. Which is a very important thing, because with out hair coloring we would be stuck with black, blonde, or brown. On the other hand, some people like to keep it natural, like me!!! Just because people don’t color their hair like most people does not mean they will never do it. Sometimes people think before they act and their afraid of the side effects and the consequences that they will suffer if their hair coloring does not turn out right or the most important, get taken care of like it should.

● The history of the substance and what advances have been made over the years to improve what we have today…. the 4th century BC it was written that the sun's rays were the best means of lightening a man's hair. It was described, that when hair was washed with an ointment (that was made in Athens), turned hair golden blonde when a man wound sit in the sun. But fair hair was not the color of choice for all societies. First Century Romans favored dark hair produced by a black dye made of boiled Walnuts and leeks. Early Saxon men dyed their hair and beards blue, red, green or orange.

● How does the existence, discovery, or development of this substance affect our lives today. List the consumers (who) and the uses (what) of this substance…. Hair coloring was originally developed by law enforcement officials as a means to identify suspected criminals. Hair coloring was quickly adapted by the cosmetics companies. Hair coloring caught the eye of the cosmetic companies. They knew it would bring them lot’s of money and every one would love too experience something new in the salon. There are six major types of hair coloring preparations: 1.Permanent oxidation dyes and toners. 2.Semi permanent dyes. 3.Temporary colors and acid rinses 4.Metallic permanent dyes. 5.Vegetable dyers 6.Bleaches You do not have to get your hair colored permanently, you can always get a rinse. A rinse will last you up until 2 to 3 weeks, depending on how much you wash your hair. You can get whatever shade you want. People constantly color their hair, whether their trying to cover up the gray or find a new look.
