Marine Bio- Day 5&6 Drill: What are some abiotic and biotic factors that would affect organisms in a salt water fish tank? Outcome: Define the different relationships between marine organisms. Compare marine symbiotic relationships. Agenda: Discuss interactions between marine organisms Begin Aquarium Project

Competition What is Competition? When two or more species compete for the same resource. Ex. Living space, food, mates, light There are two types of competition: Intraspecific - within one species Interspecific - between species

Competitive Exclusion What is Competitive Exclusion? When a less successful species is replaced by a more successful one. This happens often when an invasive species appears.

Symbiosis Symbiosis - ecological relationship between the individuals of two (or more) different species Four examples of symbiosis: 1)Parasitism – One benefits, the other is harmed (+, - ) 2)Commensalism – One benefits, the other is neither helped nor harmed ( +, O ) 3)Mutualism – Both benefit ( +, + ) 4)Predator/Prey – One hunts and kills the other (+, - )

Parasitism Examples Grouper Fish with a parasite Cymothoid isopod and a snapper fish

Commensalism Examples Pearl fish and a sea cucumber Shark with a remora fish Remora fish

Mutualism Examples Boxer Crab and anemone Clown Fish and anemone

Predator/Prey Examples Great White and seal Orcas and seal

Symbiotic Worksheet Read the 6 scenarios and determine if they are M: Mutualism, P: Parasitism, or C: Commensalism On the back explain why you chose each answer. Aquarium Project When finished place in the turn in bin and pick up a rubric and information sheet for the Aquarium Project Look over the rubric and be ready to discuss the project
