How The Knowledge DNA works A given information item (set of data) is represented by a vector (a list of attributes) containing a number of "genes" (analogous to trait-determining genes for organisms in the field of genetics). Each gene corresponds to a keyword or key-phrase screened by a keyword retrieval algorithm based on a our Knowledge classification system or ontology, The knowledge DNA®. In the future each information item will be also analyzed by trained advisors in a process that will takes 20 to 30 minutes. Ten percent of genes for each item will be analyzed by more than one advisor to ensure conformity with the standards, i.e., reliability. Genes consist in characteristics of the information item. For example, “information visualization“ (gene a) and “graph theory” (gene b) are characteristics of “infovis conference” (item 1). A group of genes determines a knowledge genre (KG), such as computer science KG have 150 genes, history KG have 350, and art KG have approximately 400. Other Knowledge genres, such as business and literature have 300–500 genes. The system depends on a sufficient number of genes and genres appropriate for each particular item to render useful results. Each gene is assigned a number between 1 and 5, in half-integer increments. Given the vector of one or more items, a list of other similar items is constructed using a distance function.
