STEM and Humanities  STEM: Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics  Humanities: English Language Arts (ELA) and Social Studies  Why?  To prepare students for 21 st century careers  To increase rigor in all content areas  To provide integration between content areas

Math  Five units  Basic facts – strategies and recall (3 seconds)  Xtra math

ELA  Fluency  Comprehension  Grammar  Vocabulary – Wow Words!  Phonics – Fundations  Spelling  Anthology and Trade Books  Handwriting-Cursive second half of year (Zaner Bloser)  Instruction  Small group  Whole group

Spelling  What’s the rule? Our focus is learning the spelling rule instead of just memorizing words.  Homework We’ll send home words on Monday that show the rule we are learning. Your child may choose several activities to practice the words.  Testing We’ll test on Friday. We may include a word that was not on the list, but has the rule.
