Digital Citizenship By Teneka Cannon

. Digital Etiquette also known as Netiquette Definition: a basic set of rule everyone should follow to make Internet a better tool for everyone who uses it

Netiquette can be expressed as how one must operate online. You should always be respectful to people on the internet. This should be relevant to all online users. treating others respectfully, not hacking other people, not downloading illegally, plagiarism, not cussing, etc.

Digital Law Copyright Fair Use Plagiarism Wrong use of the internet can cause a lot of problems, including problems with the law. The internet becomes more dangerous when people do not follow digital laws.

What is copyright? Respect others' work – have your work respected It is a basic principle of copyright that the expression of an idea in an original work is legally protected by copyright as soon as it becomes 'recorded in material form' (viewable by others). In other words, write it down, draw, record, or film it, and the original material is automatically protected by copyright. Source:

What is Fair Use? Fair use is “the right to use copyrighted material without permission or payment under some circumstances— especially when the cultural or social benefits of the use are predominant.” (The Code of Best Practices in Fair Use for Media Literacy Education, 2008) The Code does not tell you the limits of fair use rights. It’s only a guideline. The code of best practices was reviewed by a committee of legal scholars and lawyers expert in copyright and fair use.

Plagiarism A piece of writing that has been copied from someone else and is presented as being your own work." How To Avoid Plagiarism? –To avoid plagiarism, you must give credit whenever you use another person’s idea, opinion, or theory; –any facts, statistics, graphs, drawings—any pieces of information—that are not common knowledge; –quotations of another person’s actual spoken or written words; or –paraphrase of another person’s spoken or written words. Rules for Personal Internet Safety Keep Your Personal Information Private –The easiest way to avoid becoming a victim of Internet crime is to guard the safety of your personal information. Be Vigilant –You must always be alert and update your privacy and security settings while using websites such as Facebook, Myspace or Twitter Update Your Computer's Security Features –If your computer contains your digital photographs, address book, records or online banking information, it's easy for hackers to use this data for Internet crime.

Users of technology need to know and understand that damaging other people possessions, work or any thing that does not belong to you is a crime, this includes hacking into others information, plagiarizing, creating and sending viruses, downloading illegal music, etc. Conclusion
