ACTIVE LEARNING © 2015 Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation 12 The essence of Active Learning is e ngagement of learners in: Recall of their prior knowledge Making associations of new knowledge to prior knowledge Making use of prior and new knowledge as they attempt to solve problems Making comparisons and evaluating knowledge In brief, in assimilating and applying what they are learning More precisely when applied to teaching and learning, Active Learning is a model of instruction that engages learners in doing more than just listen: they must read, write, discuss and be engaged in solving problems.

ADAPTIVE LEARNING © 2015 Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation 13 Adaptive Learning is an educational method which uses “computers” as interactive teaching devices, adapting the presentation of educational material according to students prior knowledge and learning needs as indicated by their responses to questions, tasks and experiences and collecting data about learners to help instructors tailor instruction. Acrobatiq, Cerego and simulations are all examples of Adaptive Learning. Adaptive Learning systems endeavor to transform the learner from passive receptor of information to an engaged collaborator in the educational process, building upon data-driven, science of learning principles.
