Brown Bread

History of Irish Brown Bread Brown bread is a traditional bread eaten in Ireland. Many Irish families throughout the country eat this type of bread.

History of Irish Brown Bread During the Irish Famine (1845 – 1849), brown bread was given to many of the poor people in Ireland because it was easy to make.

How to make Irish brown bread!

Ingredients 480g wholemeal flour 250g white flour 2 teaspoons bread soda 2 teaspoons salt 1 pint of buttermilk

Recipe Preheat the oven to 230°C Put the wholemeal flour into a large mixing bowl along with the sieved white four, the bread soda and salt. Mix well. Carefully add three quarters of the milk to the mixture. Using hands, mix this slowly together.

The dough should come together easily however if it is too dry you should add a small amount of the buttermilk. Place the dough on a floured board and shape the dough into a flat oval, about 2 inches high. Place the dough into the oven and leave to bake for 35 minutes.
