Aim: How are populations limited by the carrying capacity of the environment?

Relationships in an Ecosystem: Predator vs. Prey Depredador vs Preza Photosynthesis Fotosistesis Water Cycle The stability of an ecosystem is dependent on the balance of these relationships/cycles.

How many students can be in a classroom? 24 students (estudiantes)

What limits the size of the student population? The number of desks, number of teachers, space Cantidad de escritorios, de profesores y el espacio

What factors can affect the size of a population? Limiting Factors- (Factores Limitantes) anything that restricts the size of a population. Two Types of Limiting Factors Abiotic (Abiotico) Biotic (Biotico)

What abiotic factors limit the size of a population? Energy, temperature, water, carbon dioxide, oxygen, soil, minerals, pH, nutrients (Energia, agua, dioxido de carbono, tierra, minerales, pH, nutrientes These resources are finite (limited) not infinite (unlimited) Estos recursos son finitos (limitados) No infinitos (No limitados)

What biotic factors limit the size of a population? Competition - the population that is the best adapted to the environment will increase and the other population will die out or will migrate Competencia- La poblacion con la mejor adaptacion al ambiente va a umentar y las otras poblaciones van a morir o a migrar. Ex. Predators, prey(food source) Ej. Depredadores, prezas

What are some examples of competition in an ecosystem? (Ejemplos de competencia) Indirect Competition: struggle for resources among organisms in an ecosystem. Competencia indirecta: los organismos necesitan los mismos recursos. The organisms best adapted to get the resources will survive and the other organisms will die or migrate.

What are some examples of competition in an ecosystem? (Ejemplos de competencia) Predator Prey relationships – cyclical changes Predador/ Preza- tenen una relacion ciclica - Direct Competition: organisms hunt and kill each other Competencia directa: Oraganismos que se cazan y matan mutuamente.

Carrying Capacity Capacidad de Carga The maximum number of organisms that the ecosystem can support. (Mayor cantidad de organismos que un ecosistema pueded sostener) It is determined by the limiting factors & competition. (Es determinado por factores limitantes y competencia) “ amount it can hold” Cantidad que puede contener

What happens to new, small populations? Que sucede con poblaciones pequenas? The population usually will increase until the carrying capacity is reached and then the population will remain stable.

Can the carrying capacity of an environment change? Yes, anytime there is a natural catastrophe or when humans take space away from the ecosystem Si, ej. Desastres naturales, impacto de los seres humanos
