Welcome to 3 rd Grade Parent Information Night Mrs. Combs Mrs. Davis Ms. Foley Mrs. Khazzoum Ms. McWilliams Expect Success!

Goals of 3 rd Grade Third Grade is a big transitional year for both students and parents. Concepts move at a much faster pace. Our goal is that students will be active & engaged in their learning, so that students will remain successful learners.

Attendance & Punctuality Punctuality and attendance are important. Instruction begins promptly at 8:00. Please ensure that your child is in the classroom. The tardy bell rings at 8:20. If your son/daughter is absent, contact the Attendance office. A note is required for each absence as soon as possible. General Conduct grade drops 1 letter for every 4 tardies in a grading period.

Please help us by doing the following at home: Have a special spot for your child’s school items. (ex. Backpack, library books, folders, etc.) Getting a good night’s sleep. Eat a healthy breakfast and pack a healthy lunch. Label all personal items (backpacks, lunch kits, sweaters, pencil pouches). Reinforce good habits (washing hands correctly, blowing nose, coughing, etc)

Other information Make sure your child follows the school’s dress code policy. –The dress code policy can be found on the klein isd website. Make sure your child doesn’t bring any toys to school. All medications need to be checked into the clinic. If your child has a fever, they need to be free of it for 24 hours without medication before they can come back to school.

Visiting Lemm Elementary ALL visitors must enter through the front doors and show ID to front office to receive a visitor badge. You need to have your driver’s license each time you come to the campus. –Visitor badge must be visible –Only visit the area stated on the badge ** This is for the safety of students and staff.** Please turn OFF cell phones and remove hats.

Volunteers If you would like to be a volunteer you must do the following: –*Visit kleinisd website- under parents. –You need to complete a volunteer application and a background check. You can do it all online. PTO If you want to know about events going on at Lemm, please visit the new Lemm PTO’s Facebook page. Helping Hands: It allows parents to assist teachers without being in the building. You can take home materials/items that teachers need help with. (cutting, sorting, etc). You can pick this up in the welcome center.

Behavior –Behavior book –Student-Teacher conference –Parent Contact We will communicate your child’s behavior through the weekly folder.

Ways to Achieve Success Reading daily Practicing Math facts Personal academic (attainable) goals Attendance/not being tardy

ELA & Social Studies Curriculum Assignments are done in class and kept in Interactive Journals. Journals are kept at school so students can use as a resource. Reading –Students should be reading daily to build stamina which prepares them for STAAR tests and future grade levels.

Reading Levels and Fluency Students reading levels are assessed at the beginning, middle, and end of the year. Parents will be notified of their child’s reading level and fluency.

This year for homework we are asking your child to read 20 minutes daily at home. Please fill out the reading log daily.

Questions to be asking at home: Good Readers constantly ask questions before, during, and after reading. Questioning provides a purpose for reading and keeps the reader engaged in the text. It propels the reader forward to search for answers to their questions. Questions are answered many different ways: in the text, from prior knowledge, inferences, and further research. There are also some questions that are not answered. Before  I wonder ?  What do I think is going to happen?  What am I going to learn?  Why did the author choose this title?  Why did the author write this?  When did the story take place?  Who is the story about?  Who is telling the story? During  What do I think will happen next?  How does the character feel?  Why did __________ happen?  I wonder why __________?  What would I do?  How is the problem going to be solved?  Do you think ____ should have _______?  Am I paying attention to the message?  Would I be friends with _______?  What might happen if __________? What do I still need to find out?  Why is this information important?  Do I understand what the author is saying? After  How did I feel when.....?  What was my opinion of.....?  When the author said __, I wondered....?  Why do you think the author.....?  What was the main idea.....?  Do I know someone like...?  What would have happened if......?  Do I agree with what the author said?  Would I be friends with _______?  What might happen if __________?  What do I still need to find out?  Why is this information important?  Do I understand what the author is saying?

Spelling Every week we will be teaching a new spelling pattern. The students will be creating their own spelling lists following the pattern for the week. The list will be found in their Homework Agenda. Spelling words will be on our teacher websites. The goal is for our students to be able to apply the spelling pattern in everyday writing. Word Wall Words are given weekly. They do not follow a pattern.

Math Curriculum The district curriculum moves at a fast pace Math Facts must be automatic –Math facts practice sheet will be sent weekly. –For additional practice use Reflex Math for facts practice. Computations (addition, subtraction, etc) should be shown on paper

Science Curriculum Lab Safety: if students are not following safety rules, they will be asked to observe rather than participate. Hands-on labs are incorporated for each unit. Science Journals- can be taken home, but it needs to be returned daily.
