UNIT IV Forming Your Own Family

What do you picture in your future “ideal” mate? What qualities/characteristics does this person have Are they like you? Are they your opposite?

I. Theories of Attraction A.Homogamy –theory that “like attracts like” 1.Outer qualities such as race, age, religion, education, and family background 2.Goals, Interests, and Values 3.Roles – agree on things like career, kids, etc.

II. Complementary Needs This theory suggests that people select others who complement and meet their personality needs XHUk

III. Social Exchange Arrange marriages between young people based on what each family has to offer

IV. Propinquity Nearness in time or place. People are more apt to meet, get to know, and stay with others who are physically close by

V. Ideal mate According to this theory, people have a mental image of an ideal mate and they measure potential partners against the ideal mate.
