 Creation Sabbath Rest  Passover  Unleavened Bread  Firstfruits  Pentecost  Trumpets  Day of Atonement  Booths  Jubilee Sabbath Rest

 Feasts were remembrances (looking back) and rehearsals (leaning forward)  Looking back to see Shalom in the creation;  Leaning forward to see Shalom in the Jubilee;  A journey “from rest to restlessness to rest.”  Feasts pointed to the Messiah, fulfilled in Jesus, the gospel proclamation and the eternal Jubilee.

 Background  What is his name?  Ten plagues against the 10 gods of Egypt;  Final plague against the gods of Egypt including the “deity” of Pharaoh;  For I will pass through the land of Egypt that night, and I will strike all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and on all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgments: I am the L ORD. (Ex 12:12)

 Background  The first Passover (Exodus 12)  a lamb without blemish for the household  Taken on the 10 th day but slaughtered on the 14th  Blood on the doorposts and lintel  Side of bitter herbs and unleavened bread  Casual dress

 From a family celebration to a community feast.  Merged with the Feast of Unleavened Bread (Luke 22:1, Mt 26:17)  BYOL or buy one already approved.  “Public” Passover: three lambs without blemish put for examination for four days

“Examination” of the lamb Chief priests and elders (Mt. 21:23) Pharisees (Mt. 22:15) Sadducees (Mt. 22:23) Lawyer (Mt. 22:34) Annas/Caiaphas Pilate

 Passover meal or Maundy Thursday  Jesus planned this dinner;  No lamb mentioned in Scripture;  Looking back, Exodus 12;  Remember, Luke 22  Lean forward, Luke 22

ON GOLGOTHAAT THE TEMPLE  At 9:00 AM Jesus is crucified  For six hours Jesus hangs on the cross  At 3:00 PM Jesus dies with the cry, “It is finished”  Jesus’ bones were not broken  At 9:00 am public lambs are tied to the stake  For six hours the public lambs are on display  At 3:00 the priest slits the throats of the public lambs and says “It is finished”  Lambs gutted without breaking bones (Ex. 12:46)

 Paul said:  7 Cleanse out the old leaven that you may be a new lump, as you really are unleavened. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed. 8 Let us therefore celebrate the festival, not with the old leaven, the leaven of malice and evil, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.  John said: Justification
