Operations on rational numbers DISTRIBUTIVE PROPERTY A (B + C) = AB + AC

Distributive property Explanation When you multiply or distribute a number that is outside the parentheses with each and every number inside the parentheses and then add all the number parts together. Example : 2 (3 + 4) = 2(3) + 2(4) = 6 + 8 = 14

Distributive property word problem Two times three plus five of a number 2 (3 + 5 ) = 2(3) + 2(5) = 6 + 10 = 16

Distributive property Three times four plus two of a number, minus two times five plus six of a number. 3 (4 + 2) – 2(5 + 6) = 3(4) + 3(2) – 2(+5) – 2(6) = 12 + 6 –10 –12) = 18 – 10 – 12 = + 8 – 12 = – 4
