Define & Answer The Office of Governor The Chief Executive Other Roles of the Governor Next in Line Major Executive Officials State Cabinets EQ: Many executive department heads are elected in their own right, not appointed by the governor. How can that affect the governor’s ability to direct them? Why? 7

The Office of Governor The Governor is the leader of the Executive Branch in any state government. In most states, the governor must be a resident of a state, 30 years old, have a 2 term limit and serve 4 year terms. Florida is one of those states that have all these listed requirements.

The Chief Executive – Like a president, a governor has many roles. The governor is: Party Leader Lead the Executive Branch Carrying out laws Name people to fill state offices Find a replacement for senators if needed Write the annual budget

Other Roles of the Governor Governors also deliver a “state of the state” message to the legislature and the citizens to provide his goals for that year. Governors can send bills to the legislature and veto bills. Governors use a line-item veto to veto specific parts of a bill instead of the whole law. They can appoint judges and grant pardons and parole to criminals.

Next in Line If something happens to the governor or if they resign, often times, the person next in line is the lieutenant governor. The governor and lieutenant governor can run on the same ballot during election in some states. Carlos Lopez-Cantera

Major Executive Officials Secretary of State oversees elections and the publishing of laws Attorney General is the state’s chief lawyer State’s Treasurer handles the flow of money into and out of the state State auditor's job is to review the conduct of state departments and offices Commissioner oversees the state’s public school system
