Locating Information from the students… Locating Information from the students… “I find this source reliable. Because when I did research on the site I found that it was done by Google, which is a somewhat reliable source.” “I find this source reliable. Because when I did research on the site I found that it was done by Google, which is a somewhat reliable source.” “I am not sure if this is the best site I could have found. But I know I could use it easily.” “I am not sure if this is the best site I could have found. But I know I could use it easily.” Quantity of information does not equal quality of website: “This article provides a lot of information which I say it’s credible” “This article provides a lot of information which I say it’s credible” “This source is very reliable because it has plenty of information about the 13th Amendment and how it affected both blacks and whites at the reconstruction time” “This source is very reliable because it has plenty of information about the 13th Amendment and how it affected both blacks and whites at the reconstruction time”

Authority and Credibility from the students…  About a source a student decided to use for his scientific research on the Great Pacific Garbage Patch: “The author is Jacob Silverman and he has a B.A. in English and creative writing from Emory University and he also studied Russian and history.”  “Also when I saw an ad from Stanford University on the site I thought ‘Stanford is a very good school and wouldn’t put their name on something that wasn’t legit.’”

Information Need and Credibility from the students…  About a source a student decided to use for his research assignment: “There was a bunch of information about everything but not much of what I needed.”  On rainforests: “The author is Kat; that is the only name it says. It doesn’t sound like she is an expert of any kind but she does live in Australia with rainforests.”  About a source a student decided to use for his research assignment: “I would have to rate this 5 out of 10 because it’s not really detailed and it’s not well written. It’s also opinionated which I don’t like because I thought it those were facts.”

Currency and Credibility from the students… “This article is somewhat current because of the information accuracy. A lot of this information in this article is very accurate and current.” “This article is somewhat current because of the information accuracy. A lot of this information in this article is very accurate and current.” “This article does not tell you how current the information is, but it does have a lot of good information in it. I don’t know if the information changed overtime and also do not know if it is outdated or not. Currency is not an important factor to consider here.” “This article does not tell you how current the information is, but it does have a lot of good information in it. I don’t know if the information changed overtime and also do not know if it is outdated or not. Currency is not an important factor to consider here.”

Glennon, Jeremy. "The Great Pacific Garbage Patch: North Pacific Ocean Gyre is One of Most Polluted Areas on Earth." Suite101.com: Online Magazine and Writers' Network. Web. 05 Jan “This website helped me with some information about the great pacific garbage patch. This website explains what effect the patch has on humans and how if affects the food chain. They also explain how there is no way of cleaning up. This website seems too reliable because this author is Jeremy Glennon. He has been the e-commerce manager, SEO manager, and a partner for the home organization website Organize It and the home organizers website Organize World for five years. The research is objective. The facts are well documented. The author is not qualified for this subject. The source is scholarly.”The facts are well documented

Freshman Science Final Reflections In a reflection survey, most of the Environmental Science students stated that the most difficult part of their research process was “finding credible, reliable sources” In a reflection survey, most of the Environmental Science students stated that the most difficult part of their research process was “finding credible, reliable sources” –“I had difficulty in this area because a lot of the sources on my topic were either biased or not credible. I think if I had found specific organizations for my issue, it would have been easier.” –“The most challenging thing was to find if the source was reliable.” –“Finding a rather good topic, in which I had enough information on. But when Ms. Batista and Ms. Zane narrowed it down, it helped me focus on that topic.” –“I would suggest to find websites for every student's specific topic because I know as a student, finding sources was the most stressful part.”

AP Human Geography Junior Student Reflections On finding information: “Most of the good data seems to be on pdf. files so Google doesn’t seem to do very well in picking them up.” Final Reflection: “While I am usually just required to gather data or information and put it on a PowerPoint or into a paper, I have learned to make sure I completely understand and analyze any piece of data that I decide to use.” Final Reflection: “For the last 8 years of schooling we have been taught a single way to right a paper: write a thesis and prove it. This standard went out the window in the formulation of this paper. Having to go about proving a new idea, or hypothesis, involves research that I was not particularly familiar with.”
