History Founded by William Penn on March 4th, Known as Province of Pennsylvania. Proprietary colony from King Charles II. Reason for founding: religious freedom/ trade / profits. Welcomed anyone and lived alongside Native Americans. Inhabited by any religion. Pennsylvania was named after Penn. Charter given to Penn Province of Pennsylvania

Government Proprietary Colony - granted to an individual / group Penn wrote a constitution for Pennsylvania that was unlike any other at the time. It guaranteed many fundamental liberties such as limited power of government, political freedom, and many others. King Charles II and William Penn

Population Pennsylvania Population Chart Many different ethnic groups took part in the population. Many of the Quakers in the population were English, Irish, Welsh, and even Dutch.

Culture Philadelphia was known as “Athens of America” because of its rich cultural life. Because of Penn's liberal principles, the province developed variety and strength in intellectual and educational institutions and interests. Quakers did not have a clergy and considered men and women equals. Most Quakers were tradespeople and shopkeepers and small farmers who distrusted rich and powerful men. The Quakers were abolitionists who wanted to get rid of slavery. Traditional home Traditional home + work

Economy Pennsylvania kept their colony economically stable by agriculture and manufacturing. There 5 main crops that helped keep the economy together... Farms were as big as 50 to 150 acres long. This includes a house, barnyard and fields. Guns were apart of manufacturing and the Pennsylvania long gun was created. People in Pennsylvania manufactured parts for ships. Pennsylvania’s lifestyle

Religion Accepted any religion, Quaker was most prominent. Penn believed that religion should not be forced. William Penn led Quaker faith. Quakers fled from Puritans. Quaker: “Society of Friends.” Opposed slavery. Believed in equality. Quakers sought “Inner Light.” Quakers living alongside Native Americans. Quote by William Penn

Major Events William Penn found Pennsylvania in Pennsylvania was the third colony to be the biggest and richest. In 1718 William Penn died and Hannah Penn took over his business affairs. The first mass was held in Philadelphia in 1732 Hannah Penn

Important People William Penn founded Pennsylvania. William Penn was an early advocate of democracy and religious freedom. Penn founded the Pennsylvania Colony to show that people who remain persistent can live free. William Penn Benjamin Franklin Franklin set up businesses and organizations in Pennsylvania.
