Symbolism Definition: Using one object or idea to represent another idea or quality
The Hair On page 71, Ponyboy says, “It was my pride. It was long and silky, just like Soda’s, only a little redder. Our hair was tuff– we didn’t have to use much grease on it. Our hair labeled us greasers, too– it was our trademark. The thing we were proud of. Maybe we couldn’t have Corvairs or madras shirts, but we could have hair.” The greaser hair could be considered a symbol in this story. What do you think the signature hairstyle symbolizes, according to Ponyboy?
Can you think of other instances where cutting someone’s hair symbolizes something?
Disguises “It’s like being in a Halloween costume we can’t get out of,” says Ponyboy after he and Johnny are disguised (73). How important is your “disguise?” Do you think you would be the same person if you totally changed your appearance? Why/ why not?
“The Fuzz” Use context clues: ▫“but one night I saw Dally gettin’ picked up by the fuzz, and he kept real cool and calm the whole time” (76). “fuzz” is slang for policemen
“Gallant” Use context clues: ▫“They was getting’ him for breakin’ out the windows in the school building, and it was Two-Bit who did that. And Dally knew it. But he just took the sentence without battin’ an eye or even denyin’ it. That’s gallant” (76). “Gallant” means brave or heroic Do you think Dally is as “gallant” as Johnny thinks he is? Why? Does Dally have any of the same qualities as the person you deemed your hero?
“Nothing Gold can Stay” Nature's first green is gold, Her hardest hue to hold. Her early leaf's a flower; But only so an hour. Then leaf subsides to leaf, So Eden sank to grief, So dawn goes down to day Nothing gold can stay. --Robert Frost What are some other meanings of “gold” besides just color? Think symbolism! Who is “Her?” Grief: Deep sorrow, esp. that caused by someone's death In your opinion, is this a happy or a sad poem? Why?
Why Robert Frost? S.E. Hinton made a decision to use this poem in The Outsiders. When an author uses someone else’s words or references another piece of writing, it is called an allusion. Now that we have taken a closer look at the poem, WHY do you think it is found in this book? How does it relate to the plot of this story?
Hiding Out For how long were Johnny and Ponyboy hiding out in the church? How is Ponyboy’s opinion of Johnny changing?
Dally’s News “’The Socs and us are having all-out warfare all over the city. That kid you killed had plenty of friends and all over town it’s Soc against grease. We can’t walk alone at all. I started carryin’ a heater…’” (83). What’s a “heater”? Use context clues!
The Last Word What do we learn at the end of the chapter? “’Hey, I didn’t tell you we got us a spy’” (84). Who is the spy? In your opinion, is it good or bad that Cherry is the new spy for the greasers?
Have a FANTASTIC DAY!!
