Introduction Scientific name is arboreal and pongidae They are in the ape family They are related to humans People call them the red apes

What do orangutans look like? Arms are extremely long Arms grow up to 7 feet! Orange red hair and dark grey skin Males have huge cheek flaps Males have beards Babies have less fur and grow up to 2-4 feet Short legs Hairy body Brown eyes Short thumbs Foot looks like an upside hand

LIFE SPAN! Lives to 60 years max endangered People are also keeping babies as pets Usually lives up to years

Landforms, weather, and habitats!  Live in rain forests only  spend most of its time up in trees  When they are up in trees they are up to 4,800 feet off the ground!

Climate and Weather  Wet  Misty  Warm  Humid  Dark  Sometimes cold  Never snows

What kind of eaters are they?  They are herbivores (doesn't eat meat).  Largest fruit eating animal in the forest  Eats: fruit, plants, nuts and tree bark  They love to eat berries and grape fruit  They eat leaves and bananas

Predator and Prey!  Babies are sometimes prey of wild pigs and pythons  Adult are not prey to anything  Humans are their biggest predator because they kill them or keep them as pets.

Behavior!  Most intelligent animal in the world!  Have 4 faces talk to each other like playful, begging for food, frightened and angry  They walk on their knuckles  Sleep in trees and make new nests every time they go to bed  They swing and eat everyday and go to new trees to sleep.  They rarely go back to the same tree or same nest to sleep.

Babies  Stay with mother for 6 or 7 years  Babies cling to their mothers hair while she swings through the trees  When they are born they are about 1 foot tall.

How They Adapt to Their Environment? Physical Adaptations  Long arms that help them swing through the trees really fast  Legs are shorter than their arms so when they swing they don’t get in their way  Their thumbs are short so they can swing more easily.  Their feet look the same as their hands so that they can stand on the branches.

How do they Act? Behavioral Adaptations They build nests and they curl up in a ball so that they won’t fall out of the tree. They swing from tree to tree so that they can travel farther and faster They will fight with each other to get food. Such as grabbing bananas from other apes. To protect themselves from humans they make scary noises and show their sharp teeth.

Physiological Adaptations Sharp set of teeth to break and eat nuts Big mouth to hold food Really strong muscles in their arms so they can swing Very good eyesight. They can see far so they know where to get food or see predators.

Fun Facts! People capture baby orangutans to keep as pets!  They like to play in mud Their only enemies are humans! Rain forest is being cut down  506 orangatans die every year
