How do organisms get energy?. Getting Energy Food chain – a sequence of connected producers and consumers Producer – an organism that makes its own food.
Decomposers are organisms that eat dead or decaying organisms. They carry out the natural process of decomposition. Fungi is the primary and most common.

Energy in the ecosystem
Presentation transcript:

 the transfer of energy and matter in the form of food when one organism eats another organism.

 a group of food chains within the same ecosystem.

1. Sun – the energy source that fuels a food chain. 2. Producer – plants convert the sun’s energy into food by a process known as photosynthesis.

 Herbivore – an organism that eats only producers.  Carnivore – an organism that eats only other consumers.  Omnivore – an organism that eats both producers and consumers  Scavenger – eats dead organisms.

– an organism that feeds on dead or decaying matter and breaks down the nutrients into the soil making them available for use. Decomposer -

Producer [Photosynthesis] Primary Consumer (Herbivore or Omnivore) Secondary Consumer [Etc. – Tertiary, Quaternary] (Omnivore or Carnivore Scavenger / Decomposers Nutrients in the soil absorbed by plants – process starts anew Arrow represent the flow of energy

Energy is lost (10% energy transfer) as you move up the pyramid
