Minnesota Pollution Control Agency Surface Water Monitoring Pam Anderson, MPCA May 20 th, 2015
Intensive Watershed Monitoring Rotating watersheds Entire state covered within 10 years. Stream chemistry collected two consecutive summers in a 10 year window Streams sampled 10x for nutrients, sediment, bacteria, chloride, and ammonia Reaches also sampled for biology
Intensive Watershed Monitoring Lakes are sampled 2 consecutive summers Lakes sampled primarily for nutrients, sediment, and chlorophyll-a. Additional measures of transparency, oxygen, temperature, pH, etc. are collected. Considerable data comes from external partners.
Watershed Pollutant Load Monitoring Network Designed to calculate loads – Focuses on Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Solids Permanent stations sampled ~25-35 times per year Subset of sites get mercury monitoring – clean hands/dirty hands
Other Data Sources Permitted facilities – data collection required for permit compliance External parties – counties, citizens, water management organizations Other state agencies – DNR, MDA
