White Blood Cells

Types

What do they do?  Play a large role in the immune system  Fight disease and infection  Creating antibodies  Phagocytosis

 Doctors can use the amount of white blood cells to determine if our body is fighting an infection.

3 Types of Phagocytic WBC’s  Eosinophils  Neutrophils  Monocytes

Phagocytic leucocytes  Consume infectious micro-organisms  Bacteria  Viruses  Dead cells

Eosinophils  Respiratory and digestive tracts  Parasites and Allergies

Neutrophils  50-60% WBC’s  Can leave blood vessels  Pus

Monocytes  Live in the bloodstream  Go into tissues and become macrophages  BIG!

Ejection of debris by exocytosis
