Advanced ASL III, IV, V Multiproject LT: Pick a relevant song, poem, story, or skit to make accessible to the Deaf community SC: Standard 1.3 Students present information, concepts, and ideas in American Sign Language to an audience of viewers on a variety of topics.

Agenda  Pick a project  Options and choices  Rubric – Focus on NMS  Challenge yourself LT: Pick a relevant song, poem, story, or skit to make accessible to the Deaf community SC: Standard 1.3 Students present information, concepts, and ideas in American Sign Language to an audience of viewers on a variety of topics.

Criteria and Expectations You will need to let me/the class know what you have chosen by tomorrow (type and name of project) While the amount you sign will change with the kind of project you choose, you must have a minimum of TWO minutes signing time. You will likely be closer to 3 or 4 minutes This project is INDIVIDUAL or ONE PARTNER, however, do not rely on a partner for presentation. If they are not here, you still must present (all parts) of the project. Do not split a non-duet. If you present half a project, it will result in half a grade. You will show me your outline/GLOSS next week The end product will be due next Monday (16 th ) but small parts of your project will be “due” (checked) throughout this week *******Your voice will be off for the duration of this project!!!!!!!!!!!********

SimCom Simultaneous communication is talking/whispering and signing at the same time. BAD HABIT, tsk, tsk Don’t do it It’s still “talking” You end up signing English or talking ASL – neither is considered “acceptable”

Picking or Writing a Poem Poems can be a challenge because so many consist of double meanings, figurative language, and messages that can be decoded only by the writer There are many amazing visual poems – you can even write one – so be sure you pick one that you understand or are willing to analyze until you do understand it

Monologues Monologues are often thoughts or thought processes on a topic They can make a statement, political, personal, almost anything – check “monologues” out on Google or YouTube. Old Example from Shakespeare… but there are modern day examples, too (Think Ellen DeGeneres) HELENA: I confess, Here on my knee before high heaven and you, That before you, and next unto high heaven, I love your son. My friends were poor but honest; so's my love. Be not offended, for it hurts not him That he is loved of me. I follow him not. By any token of presumptuous suit, Nor would I have him till I do deserve him; Yet never know how that desert should be. I know I love in vain, strive against hope; Yet in this captious and intensible sieveI still pour in the waters of my love… Read more at

Stories Stories are a lot of fun when they are done correctly The best story tellers show visualization and exert confidence when they present their story and use space well Using facial expression is extremely important in ASL story telling – your expression, alone, can tell a story

Picking a Song Picking a song to interpret can be a challenge. Why? The best songs to interpret have stories in them What to avoid – Literally signing figurative language – Incorrectly interpreting idioms (A piece of cake) – Meaningless sounds and words – Repetition (boring!)
