Presentation transcript:

I wonder why this book isn’t selling? Oh dear!

 AP day book – Daily listing of upcoming events published by Associated Press  Experience covering a “beat” – a geographic or subject in which a journalists specializes  Other media outlets (TV, advertising, Internet, books, magazines, etc.) get hard news stories from Associated Press  Personal experiences

 Step 1: Stories are assigned or selected.  Step 2: Information is gathered(research, interviews, etc.) and stories are shaped.  Step 3: Editors decide where stories will be placed/layout created.  Step 4: Editors look for weaknesses, fact- checkers verify truth, copy-editors fix grammar and style issues, headlines and captions are created.

 Step 5: Design and layout artists place articles and graphics on the website.  Step 6: Proofreaders complete a final check.  Step 7: An editor gives his final approval.  Step 8: The articles are published on the website!

 Goal: Attract the largest audience possible  Larger audience=higher advertising rate=more $$$ (balance cost of hiring editors and computer science specialists to update your site)  Subscriptions and newsstand sales

 You need to decide who you want YOUR audience to be.  Then, you’ll have to choose a variety of hard and soft news stories (as well as advertisements and “extras”) that is appropriate for your target audience.
