PSALM 16 PSALM 1 Martin Luther; James Boice What the relationship of God followers to God was like before Christs PSALM 1 PSALM 16

PSALM 16 Psalm 16 Setting: Psalm 16 Outline: David’s “Outlaw” years Present Faith: vv. 1-6 Bridge between present & future: vv. 7-9 Future Hope: vv. 10-11 His future The Messiah’s future

PSALM 16 PRINCIPLES The most important thing in a person’s life is their relationship to The One Holy Triune God A personal relationship with God sustains a person regardless of their circumstances God teaches and guides His children There is life after death Jesus Christ’s resurrection is true

Psalm 16:1 Preserve me, O God, for in you I take refuge Psalm 16:1 Preserve me, O God, for in you I take refuge. 2 I say to the LORD, “You are my Lord; I have no good apart from you.” 3 As for the saints in the land, they are the excellent ones, in whom is all my delight. 4 The sorrows of those who run after another god shall multiply; their drink offerings of blood I will not pour out or take their names on my lips. 5 The LORD is my chosen portion and my cup; you hold my lot. 6 The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance. 7 I bless the LORD who gives me counsel; in the night also my heart instructs me. 8 I have set the LORD always before me; because he is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken. 9 Therefore my heart is glad, and my whole being rejoices; my flesh also dwells secure. 10 For you will not abandon my soul to Sheol, or let your holy one see corruption. 11 You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.

PRESENT FAITH Psalm 16:1 Preserve me, O God, for in you I take refuge. 2 I say to the LORD, “You are my Lord; I have no good apart from you.” Matthew 16:26 For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? David: on the run; with nothing, but he has everything that satisfies and is necessary David trusts God, submits to God an is satisfied with God

PRESENT FAITH Psalm 16:3 As for the saints in the land, they are the excellent ones, in whom is all my delight. 4 The sorrows of those who run after another god shall multiply; their drink offerings of blood I will not pour out or take their names on my lips. Hebrews 10:24 And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, 25 not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near. When a person loves God; they love other people who love God When a person is devoted to God; they do not allow those who are unsaved to influence them

PRESENT FAITH Psalm 16:5 The LORD is my chosen portion and my cup; you hold my lot. 6 The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance. 1 Peter 3:18 For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit, “God Is The Gospel” John Piper God not things is my portion, my cup, my lot, my pleasant place, my beautiful inheritance.

BRIDGE BETWEEN PRESENT & FUTURE Psalm 16:7 I bless the LORD who gives me counsel; in the night also my heart instructs me. 8 I have set the LORD always before me; because he is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken. 9 Therefore my heart is glad, and my whole being rejoices; my flesh also dwells secure. Romans 12:2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.  The believer has their faith strengthened by prayer, thinking about God, studying His word…setting the Lord before them!....This makes them strong, steady in the storm

FUTURE HOPE Psalm 16:10 For you will not abandon my soul to Sheol, or let your holy one see corruption. 11 You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.

FUTURE HOPE 1 Corinthians 15:51 Behold! I tell you a mystery. We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, 52 in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed. 53 For this perishable body must put on the imperishable, and this mortal body must put on immortality. 54 When the perishable puts on the imperishable, and the mortal puts on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written: “Death is swallowed up in victory.” 55 “O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?” Life after death

THE RESURRECTION IS TRUE Acts 2:25 For David says concerning him, “27 For you will not abandon my soul to Hades, or let your Holy One see corruption. 28 You have made known to me the paths of life; you will make me full of gladness with your presence.’ 29 “Brothers, I may say to you with confidence about the patriarch David that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. 31 he foresaw and spoke about the resurrection of the Christ, that he was not abandoned to Hades, nor did his flesh see corruption. 32 This Jesus God raised up, and of that we all are witnesses.

PSALM 16 PRINCIPLES The most important thing in a person’s life is their relationship to The One Holy Triune God A personal relationship with God sustains a person regardless of their circumstances God teaches and guides His children There is life after death Jesus Christ’s resurrection is true
