Lesson 5: Investigating Lunar Phases

The moon goes through a cycle of changes in its apparent shape which are referred to as “Phases.” We see these phases or changes as the moon orbits Earth. The Moon’s orbital period can be understood in two ways: Sidereal month – time it takes the Moon to orbit Earth one complete revolution which is about 27.3 days long Synodic month – time it takes between successive repetitions of the same lunar phase (new moon to new moon) which is about 29,5 days long Lunar Phases

As the Moon orbits Earth its cycle is divided into eight equal parts, which each lasting a little over half a week.
