Objective  Students will explore Lunar Phases by creating a Lunar Phase flipbook.

Words of the Day  Waning: Getting Smaller  Waxing: Getting Bigger  Elongation: The angular distance of a planet or other celestial body from the sun.  Waning: Getting Smaller  Waxing: Getting Bigger  Elongation: The angular distance of a planet or other celestial body from the sun.

Natural Time Periods Natural Time Periods: 1 Year = 365 and 1/4 days (Revolution) 1 Day = 24 hours (Rotation) Weeks and Months modify the natural time periods. Natural Time Periods: 1 Year = 365 and 1/4 days (Revolution) 1 Day = 24 hours (Rotation) Weeks and Months modify the natural time periods.

Natural Time Periods Lunar Month: There are 29 and 1/2 days in a Lunar Month  There are 4 phases of the Lunar Month 1.New Moon We can’t see it 2.First Quarter 3.Full Moon 4.Last Quarter Lunar Month: There are 29 and 1/2 days in a Lunar Month  There are 4 phases of the Lunar Month 1.New Moon We can’t see it 2.First Quarter 3.Full Moon 4.Last Quarter

Natural Time Periods Lunar Month: The 4 phases of the lunar month match the four weeks of the calendar month. Results in a 12 month year because 365 divided by 29 and 1/2 ≈ 12 Solar Day: The time it takes for Earth to make one full rotation relative to the sun. Sidereal Day: The time it takes for Earth to make one full rotation relative to a point in space Constellations. Sidereal Day is 4 minutes shorter than Solar Day.
