Extreme Weather and Climate Lesson 2 :How do we measure weather?

Measuring Weather L.O: To know different pieces of equipment for measuring weather and the units of measurement used.  All pupils will be able to: Give examples of how some types of weather are measured and the correct units measured in.   Most Pupils will be able to: Give the equipment and correct unit of measurement for various types of weather and identify most of these from pictures. Some pupils will have taken this further and will be able to: Know all the different types of equipment and units of measurement and identify these correctly and accurately.

Definitions “ The weather is what happens in the atmosphere on a daily basis, it changes frequently,” (which is why it is difficult to measure!)

Why do people measure the weather? To plan ahead – decide when to do certain things To plan holidays at the right time of year To decide what to wear To prepare for bad weather e.g. flooding or heavy snow For people’s jobs e.g. people who pilot planes and ships, farmers and mountaineers

How do people measure the weather? Meteorologists are people who study and measure the weather. The weather is observed by weather stations based on land and equipment carried on planes, ships, weather balloons and satellites. They tell us what the temperature is, how much rain fell, how fast the wind is blowing and what direction it’s coming from, as well as how cloudy it is.

The Key Words for today are: Temperature Wind Direction Visibility Air Pressure Precipitation Wind Speed Cloud Cover Can you think of definitions for these?

How fast the wind is blowing…

The Key Words for today are: Temperature Wind Direction Visibility Air Pressure Precipitation Wind Speed Cloud Cover Can you think of definitions for these?

Where the wind is blowing from…

The Key Words for today are: Temperature Wind Direction Visibility Air Pressure Precipitation Wind Speed Cloud Cover Can you think of definitions for these?

Water falling from the sky (rain, hail, sleet, snow)

The Key Words for today are: Temperature Wind Direction Visibility Air Pressure Precipitation Wind Speed Cloud Cover Can you think of definitions for these?

How far ahead we can see on a foggy day

The Key Words for today are: Temperature Wind Direction Visibility Air Pressure Precipitation Wind Speed Cloud Cover Can you think of definitions for these?

Exactly how hot or cold it is...

The Key Words for today are: Temperature Wind Direction Visibility Air Pressure Precipitation Wind Speed Cloud Cover Can you think of definitions for these?

How ‘heavy’ the air is…

The Key Words for today are: Temperature Wind Direction Visibility Air Pressure Precipitation Wind Speed Cloud Cover Can you think of definitions for these?

How much of the sky is hidden by clouds

The Key Words for today are: Temperature Wind Direction Visibility Air Pressure Precipitation Wind Speed Cloud Cover Can you think of definitions for these?

Now fill in the first two columns in your table Weather Term…. Means… Usually given… Measured Using… Temperature How heavy the air is Visibility

What are weather terms usually given as? We use centimetres or metres for measuring small distances The amount of Diet Coke in a bottle is given in litres The cost of something is given in £ and pence. What about the Weather Terms we have looked at?.........

Millibars Oktas (Eighths of sky) Miles per hour (mph) ° C (celcius or fahrenheit) Compass point (N, E, S, W) Metres or kilometres Millimetres (mm)

Now complete the 3rd column in your table Weather Term…. Means… Usually given… Measured Using… Temperature Air pressure Cloud cover Wind speed Wind direction Precipitation visibility

What equipment do we need to measure the weather? Thermometer Anemometer Barometer Weather Vane Rain Gauge Visibility Meter Your Eyes Next

Now complete the last column in your table Weather Term…. Means… Usually given… Measured Using… Temperature How heavy the air is Visibility

You should now have a completed table of ways to measure the weather
