A French company tried (and failed) to build a Panama Canal before the US attempted it.

John Hay Secretary of State who made a treaty with Britain about the Panama Canal.

The Roosevelt Corollary said that chronic wrongdoing of nations in the Western hemisphere might force the US to play a “police officer role”.

Dollar Diplomacy uses economic power and business investment to influence other nations.

Woodrow Wilson Wanted to protect US interests in Latin America by encouraging the growth of democracy there.

Porfirio Diaz Ruler of Mexico who eagerly pursued foreign investment, ruled his people harshly, and did nothing to solve the poverty of his people.
