Types of Chemical Reactions
Synthesis Reaction ~ When two are combined to make one.
A + B --> C
Synthesis Reaction ~ When two are combined to make one. A + B --> C 2H 2 (g) + O 2 (g) --> 2H 2 O(g)
Synthesis Reaction ~ When two are combined to make one. A + B = C 2H 2 (g) + O 2 (g) = 2H 2 O(g) Despite what the book says, the above reaction does NOT power rockets.
Synthesis Reaction ~ When two are combined to make one. A + B = C 2H 2 (g) + O 2 (g) = 2H 2 O(g) Despite what the book says, the above reaction does NOT power rockets. 2H 2 ( l ) + O 2 ( l ) = 2H 2 O(g) This one does
Synthesis Reaction ~ When two are combined to make one. A + B = C Fe + O 2 --> Fe 2 O 3
Synthesis Reaction ~ When two are combined to make one. A + B = C Fe + O 2 --> Fe 2 O 3 4Fe + 3O 2 --> 2Fe 2 O 3
Decomposition Reaction ~ When one comes apart to make two.
AB --> A + B
Decomposition Reaction ~ When one comes apart to make two. AB --> A + B 2H 2 O 2 ( l ) ---> 2H 2 O( l ) + O 2 ( g )
Decomposition Reaction ~ When one comes apart to make two. AB --> A + B 2H 2 O 2 ( l ) ---> 2H 2 O( l ) + O 2 ( g ) 2Fe 2 O 3 --> 4Fe + 3O 2
Displacement Reactions ~ when one or two things take the place of some others. Single Replacement ~ A + BC --> AC + B
Displacement Reactions ~ when one or two things take the place of some others. Single Replacement ~ A + BC --> AC + B
Displacement Reactions ~ when one or two things take the place of some others. Single Replacement ~ A + BC --> AC + B HCl + Al ---> H 2 + AlCl 3
Displacement Reactions ~ when one or two things take the place of some others. Single Replacement ~ A + BC --> AC + B HCl + Al ---> H 2 + AlCl 3 6HCl + 2Al ---> 3H 2 + 2AlCl 3
Displacement Reactions ~ when one or two things take the place of some others. Double Replacement ~ two things trade places AB + CD --> AD + CB Ba(NO 3 ) 2 + K 2 (SO 4 ) --> Ba(SO 4 ) + 2K(NO 3 )
Displacement Reactions ~ when one or two things take the place of some others. Double Replacement ~ two things trade places AB + CD --> AD + CB Ba(NO 3 ) 2 + K 2 (SO 4 ) --> Ba(SO 4 ) + 2K(NO 3 )
Exothermic reaction gives off heat. “Exo” means out. Basically a fire.
Endothermic reaction absorbs heat from the environment. Basically a cold pack.
Exothermic reaction gives off heat. “Exo” means out. Basically a fire. Endothermic reaction absorbs heat from the environment. Basically a cold pack. To speed up a reaction, use a catalyst. Inhibitor would be something that slows down a reaction, or a gets in the way of human endeavor. Like saying he “inhibits” our work in science class, maybe …..?
