Amazon.com “Kindle” Erin G. Wolfe CC 590 4/10/08

What is assistive technology? Assistive technology is technology used by individuals with disabilities in order to perform functions that might otherwise be difficult or impossible

Kindle What is a Kindle? Why is it unique? ▫“Electronic-paper” Display ▫Wireless connectivity ▫Free access to popular blogs, Wikipedia, your own.pdf and.doc files, html files, etc. ▫Holds 200 books; 110,000 currently available for download ▫Can have magazine and Newspaper subscriptions automatically delivered

Why not just get a laptop? Kindle only weighs 10.3 oz.7 inches thick One 2 hour recharge lasts 2-7 days depending on your wireless usage $399 vs. $1799 (MacBook Air) Come with an address, so documents can be ed directly to the device

How is it an assistive device? Display is easy to read; has been reviewed positively by people with low vision Text size can be enlarged, especially helpful for magazines and newspapers Buttons are placed to be easy to use for right and left handed people Can download and listen to ebooks

How could it be better? Should have integrated text reader program Need to have textbooks available in e-format to alleviate need to carry books around Maybe in version 2.0….. References: ▫ ▫ ▫
