EXAMPLES: FORESHADOWING, CONFLICT, SUSPENSE

Foreshadowing example: Divergent At the beginning of the novel, Tris spends a lot of time explaining that she doesn’t fit in with the other Abnegations—selflessness isn’t something that comes naturally to her. She also mentions several times how amazed she is by the Dauntless. These early thoughts foreshadow her choice to leave Abnegation and join the Dauntless for initiation.

Conflict example: Person vs. Society

Suspense example: Miracle on Ice The most suspenseful moment in the movie Miracle on Ice takes place during the USA vs. USSR Olympic hockey game. Since we don’t know how the conflict (the outcome of the game) will turn out, we experience suspense as we watch the game unfold.
