What is a Project? - Can be in any industry and/or discipline, - Creates a unique product/service (nothing else exactly like it), - Clearly defined objectives (e.g. double revenue in one year), - Defined beginning and end (temporary), - Progressively elaborated as project is better understood - Program Management, - Portfolio Management.

What Defines a Good Project Manager? To be effective as a project manager you need to understand what needs to be achieved to meet the project requirements (objectives) and have the authority to make project decisions. A good project manager has relevant knowledge of: - products or services being addressed by the project, - project budget (people, equipment, etc.), and - project time frame.

Project Objective: - Develop an internship program for the Project Management Office (PMO) employing five interns per year within three years Initial Project Stakeholders: - PMO VP - PMO Manager Project Budget: - Four students for 10 hours a week for 16 weeks - Hitachi Consulting mentor 12 hours total - PMO Manager for 2 hours each week Janus Capital Group Student Project

Value of Certification -Why PMI Certification? -Federal Government requires project managers are certified -Exam preparation focuses on definitions, best practices and other useful things (makes sense for an introduction to project management course) -Exam is situational -Used as a filter for many opportunities -Becoming a student of project management has made me a better project manager
