What has happened in 2007? 1.Development in underway fCO2 databases 2.Data warehouse – easy way to extract data and metadata 3.Outlook

Underway fCO2 data bases Might be confusing, but there are actually three underway fCO2 databases in use for CARBOOCEAN: 1.Surface Ocean fCO2 Global database (only public data) 2.Restricted underway fCO2 data consisting of CARBOOCEAN and not yet published data by CARBOOCEAN PIs 3.Combined database (only for CARBOOCEAN scientists)

1. Surface Ocean fCO2 Global database

Background This database is a result from the SOCOVV workshop (Paris, 2007) and is a community effort. There it was agreed to establish a standard global surface CO2 data set that would bring together all publicly available surface CO2 data in a common format.

fCO2 (water) was calculated to the same standards for all data (work done by Are Olsen) contains CO2 measurements as provided by PI (all information is being kept) data treatment is documented missing important parameters were added from World Ocean Atlas (2005) and NCEP/NCAR cruise labeling is consistend (EXPOCODE is being used)

Some facts time frame: data from about 1300 cruises approx. 5 million measurements all data is public Data will be secondary quality controlled by regional groups. Afterwards will a report be published with detailed metadata for each cruise! Matlab scripts for calculationss will be made available.

2. Restricted CARBOOCEAN underway fCO2 database contains CARBOOCEAN and pre- CARBOOCEAN data approx. 325 cruises more than 2 million measurements (about half were gathered during CARBOOCEAN) about 1 million CARBOOCEAN and preCARBOOCEAN data are being made public recently (about 120 cruises) Contains data as reported by the PIs

Restricted CARBOOCEAN underway fCO2 database

3. Combined database 1.Surface Ocean fCO2 global database 2. CARBOOCEAN underway fCO2 database + PUBLIC DATA NOT PUBLIC DATA = NOT PUBLIC

Basically the result of combining the two databases. Total: more than 1500 cruises with more than 6.1 million measurements ( ) all in the same format.

Combined database Overview and spatial distribution

Combined database Overview and temporal distribution

Open source software developed by Partner 16 (WDC-MARE) Award winning Open Source Software (InfoWorld 100 award, rated as one of the best 100 IT projects in 2007) Data warehouse

Don’t be afraid – it is password protected!

DOI is being registert at libraries exactly like a publication

Outlook Data portal technology (developed by U. Schindler) will be used to cluster all ICSU World Data Center Data Warehouse will be available for all data (late spring) Global Ocean Color data (remote sensing data e.g. Chlorophyll) will be available through the data portal

Thank you

A consistend cruise labeling convention. Allows easy and clear indentification of cruises. Consists of a country code, vessel code and the start date. Example:06MT EXPOCODE Country code 06 Germany Vessel code MT Meteor Starting day of the cruise
